Traditional Bathroom Designs
The bathroom should be a place of profound serenity. And the opportunity to luxuriate in deep pools of silken bubbles in surroundings as beautiful as they are practical is an attainable aspiration for us all.

“Traditional” suggests cast-iron baths, Victorian sinks with elaborate faucets. But traditional often works best when combined with a couple of modernist twists that brings the Victorians into the 21st century.
We’ve scoured the sites for some beautiful traditional bathroom ideas that we think you’re going to adore. It’s time to tear yourself away from the conventional and plunge into the luxury that modern materials can bring to this most sacred of sanctums.

The Deep Legality Of Blue

Traditional Bathroom Ideas The Deep Legality Of Blue
We love how this traditional room is offered a generous spaciousness against the deep infinity of the dark walls. The traditional geometry of the sink suggests the seductive curves of the bidet and the simple toilet unit; all spaced out equally along the sensual two-tone of the decadent blue. The claw foot bath reflects the depth of brooding calm with a deep, matte shade adorning its outer shell. The roll-top of the white enamel makes this traditional bath a most welcoming prospect. The beautiful chevron tessellation of the parquet flooring suggests an unusual three-dimensional angularity, while the funky ceiling lighting pendant offers some cheeky decadent modernity. The stark contrast of white against blue is striking throughout this fabulous bathroom.

Iberian Influences

Traditional Bathroom Ideas Iberian Influences
This bathroom is actually fairly unremarkable but saved by the irregularity of the tiling, proving that well-considered tiles can make the room. The mid-height tongue-and-groove is a lovely, traditional touch, as is the claw foot, colored bath, and the mismatched, pastel green sink unit that reverberates in contrast to the flint silk paint that predominates this narrow bathroom. The open shelving suggests nonchalant confidence, while it’s the crazy floor tiling lifts this plain bathroom into a funky anachronism that time forgot. Heavily patterned tiling is a mainstay of the Iberian peninsula, and the none-so-subtle addition of this crazy paving, here, adds a little ski-sophistication to an otherwise rather dull space.

The Executive Cloakroom

Traditional Bathroom Ideas The Executive Cloakroom
Perhaps not every home can pull off such unashamed decadence, but this remarkable use of demon-blacks and regal golds surely combine to create a cloakroom experience that couldn’t fail to be the talk of the town. The gloss of the fake crocodile-skin wallpaper reflects the light, creating a sense of depth and expanse in this potentially claustrophobic space, while the welcome cream floor-tile brings this rather gauche affair crashing down to earth. The curves and the unusual high-gloss of the toilet are suddenly interrupted by the right angles of the base unit – this tongue-in-cheek space is a hive of contradictions. No other lighting arrangement would suit this cornucopia of the slightly oily than a chandelier, casting reflections onto the unusually shiny black of the wallpaper. The black and white marble is a tricky look to pull off, but it sits most comfortably amongst the art-decor legs, the Egyptian rose-taps, and the tastefully over-stated gold-framed mirror. There’s nothing apologetic about this car-crash of tradition, decadence, and the Gotham tuber-camp. Batman would sheet in jealousy.

Understated Elegance

This bathroom is an excellent demonstration of what can be achieved with the cheapest wall-tiles in the shop. These square, white matte tiles are often to be found in the bargain bin of any tile store, but a touch of creativity has lifted these bland sheets of white into something quite remarkable. The diamond setting really does make a beautiful feature of a cheap tile. The vanity unit makes a lovely, natural contrast to the geometric perfection of the tiles, with two drawers of valuable storage space to boot. Sitting atop the vanity unit is a modern, square sink unit that adds a touch of high value to this traditional bathroom. The Oxford Blue walls bring this combination of simplicity and modernity back to its traditional roots, while the cistern-less toilet adds another cheeky nod to the modern day. This is a lovely combination of the traditional and the contemporary.

The Parisian Powder Palace

Traditional Bathroom Ideas The Parisian Powder Palace
This Parisian-inspired palace of peace makes tasteful use of calming color, harmonizing the white and the buttermilk. The white of the wood paneling, along with the perfectly restored shuttering, wash this space in clean lines. Light simply pours into this combination of flat color and rustic flooring. The claw foot bath is the focal point of this space, with the Regent shower rose and faucet setting the old-fashioned charm in this bathroom that wouldn’t look out of place in any fine villa. The vintage, up cycled metal chair finds new life as a side-table in these surroundings of serenity.

The Victorian Asylum

Traditional Bathroom Ideas The Victorian Asylum
OK, so perhaps asylum-chic is a new and rather specific niche, but this fabulous presentation of unashamed Victorians is nothing short of stunning. The claw foot bath with chrome feet and faucet are the epitome of retro styling, while the glass shower screen is a little nod to the comforts of 21st-century living. The art-decor trim around the back and sides of the sink unit are a slightly anachronistic touch, but otherwise, this celebration of ceramic is spectacular. There’s a lot of hard surfaces here, putting one in mind of the chill of a home, per-central heating – requiring some soft touches to be really homely. A shag-pile rug; some wall art with predominant burnt oranges; and some warmer, ambient lighting would do the trick. Otherwise this is one of those bathrooms that would certainly make the jaw drop.

Warm Greys

Traditional Bathroom Ideas Warm Greys
This traditional bathroom has plenty of retro appeal, with both feet placed firmly in the comfort of the 21st century. The claw foot bath has a classic look, with a modern, inner square rim that fits snugly into the corner of the room. The brick tiling (that is surely the must-have look for 2018) has a textured sheen that brings warmth, while the grey of the grouting cleverly extends onto the toilet seat and the window wall. The parquet-styling of the floor tiling brings a pastel warmth to this traditional array of whites, introducing some sandy blues to the mix, so subtly echoed with the blue glass of the bottle collection at the foot of the bath. The flat matte of the grey wall offers a beautiful textural contrast to the tiling, bringing balance to this room of warm, welcoming tones. Fabulous.

So, there you go! Some traditional bathroom ideas with a decidedly 21st-century twist. We love the combination of the old and the new, bringing comfort to the retro styling of less decadent bygone days. What do you think? We love to hear your comments.
